Some of the most meaningful places to photograph a family aren’t scenic overlooks or wide open fields. Sometimes, it’s their home. These in-home family photos in Portsmouth, New Hampshire were taken within the the spaces this family moves through every day: the living room where the family unwinds after a long day, the kitchen where their mornings begin, the bedroom where the baby is rocked to sleep.
And for a family with two young boys, a curious three-year-old and a baby, it was the perfect place to document this season. In their home, on a normal day… which is often exactly the kind of moment families want to remember later.
Why In-Home Family Sessions Work So Well With Young Kids

For families with young children, staying home often changes the entire experience of a photo session. Kids don’t need time to warm up to an unfamiliar place or to explore the new location. They are in the safest place they know… with their parents, in their home. That comfort and familiarity show up immediately.
At home, kids simply behave the way they normally do, and that’s often where the most honest moments come from. Their favorite toys are right where they left them, which gives them a sense of comfort from the start. They climb onto the couch beside their parents without being asked. They crawl under the table just because they can.
Instead of trying to guide children into a space that feels unfamiliar, we meet them exactly where they already feel comfortable. And from there, the moments tend to unfold on their own. That’s what makes these at-home family pictures in Portsmouth, NH feel so natural; the photos reflect life as it actually happens inside the home.
Using Multiple Rooms to Tell the Full Story

Because these lifestyle family photos took place at their home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, we were able to move through a few different spaces they naturally spend time in during our time together.
We started in the living room. The family sat together on the couch, which quickly turned into a tickle fight. The whole room was filled with laughter.
In the kitchen, both boys sat on the counter while their parents stood close beside them. Being up there made it easy for mom and dad to lean in and give them a few kisses.
We spent the last part of their session in the bedroom. For a moment things slowed down… the toddler gave mom a kiss before deciding the pillows were fun to jump on.
Moving between rooms like this keeps the session relaxed and gives families a gallery that reflects what life actually looks like inside their home.
The Beauty of Documenting Life Where It Actually Happens

When families choose an in-home family photoshoot, they’re often choosing something deeper than a beautiful backdrop. They’re choosing to remember the place where life is actually happening. The couch where bedtime stories are read. The kitchen where snacks are requested every five minutes. The stairs where little feet run up and down throughout the day.
These spaces hold memories long before a camera comes out. And years from now, they often become some of the most meaningful details in the photos.
Because it’s theirs.
